HAMPCO, Inc., “Helping Assist Multiple Purpose Community Organizations”, was created in 1992 and incorporated in 1997 as a nonprofit organization per the efforts of Representative Willie Hunter, Jr. who searched for a “fiscal agent” to manage state funds that had been allocated through the Office of Urban Affairs, Baton Rouge, LA to the House of Representatives District 17, Monroe, LA. His purpose for creating this organization primarily but not necessarily limited thereto was to act as a “fiscal agent” of state funds. In 1992, Representative Hunter took note of a program called Project Drive which was providing services to this area through the efforts of Mona Hamilton Gibbs. Representative Hunter collaborated with this program and through this collaboration HAMPCO Inc. was birthed.
Initially, the mission of HAMPCO was to just serve as an anti-poverty entity on behalf of the people of District 17, providing human services to the indigent, neglected destitute, hungry, homeless, illiterate, unemployed, and underemployed. The programs included but were not limited to those offered by the state, federal and local governments. The services were provided through research, planning, and development, and financing, evaluation of services through coordination with other agencies to attain social and economic independence for the benefit of all present and future generations of people living in District 17/Ouachita Parish.
Today, through its efforts and hard work, HAMPCO, Inc. serves over 3300 citizens of Northeast Louisiana and employs over 51 persons. HAMPCO, Inc. achieves its goal of providing a valuable service to the communities while making a major impact in the area of Economic Development.
